1989: GE 8545 leads an intermodal
Author: Pattenburg

It is June, 1989 as GE 8545 and a second unidentified diesel lead an intermodal in the shadow of the St. Louis's Gateway Arch. Off to the left can be seen the mighty Mississippi River.

Nice image - thank you. Probably a BN freight out of the ex-Frisco Lindenwood Yard in southwest St. Louis, perhaps bound for Galesburg via West Quincy,. Mo. and Quincy, Illinois.

After the Frisco was merged into BN, such trains were regular occurrences, as they still are today. They operated over TRRA trackage from the end of ex-Frisco track at Grand Ave. interlocking west of downtown, to a junction with the ex-CB&Q "K-Line" northward along the Mississippi at North Market St., north of downtown. This route took them through the three tunnels through the Gateway Arch grounds on TRRA.
