Westbound BN reroute about to cross Columbia Blvd and into UP s Penn tunnel with brand new SD-40-2 7121 on the point.  Date is 12-17-78.

The BN's own bridge over the Willamette River used to gain access to Portland from Vancouver had been hit by an ocean going ship on October 29, 1978 and repairs would not be finished until January, 1979.   BN (and MILW and Amtrak) had to route their Portland bound trains coming from the north through UP's tunnel and Albina Yard then over the Steel Bridge to reach the west side of Portland which is split by the Willamette River.  

Also shot Amtrak coming out of the tunnel during this period in time.
