UP 844 earning its keep pulling a real passenger train
Author: jtwlunch

Today's Gibson collection scan is of a photo by Bill Gibson, SR of UP 4-8-4 844 pulling train 27 Overland westbound at Dale Creek, Wyoming in August of 1952.  The photo has all the markers of the steam era, semaphores, water tank, water plug, a station sign you can read, trailing smoke, passenger train, and speed.  The express box is interesting going westbound-what was in it?  Company dining car supplies for down the line?

Like this picture a lot.  It's interesting to compare the depth of mainline ballast then, versus now.

A great image by Mr.Gibson !
At that date while I was figuring out how to walk, it would be another 22 years before I had the pleasure of seeing that engine.
