The ones that got away. Railroads I wanted more of.
Author: Roadjob

You would think looking at all the posts I have put up, that I would have been grateful for the time I was an active rail photographer. I truly am! But human nature, being what it is, I always wanted what I couldn't have. My miss list included, The SP&S, Milwaukee's mountain electrics, the NYO&W, passenger trains in general before Amtrak, and on a very local front, the Ma&Pa...Maryland and Pennsylvania, which I saw as a kid in Towson Maryland, but never got to photograph. I also got on roads that were generally shots that I took while going to somewhere else. That is the subject today. I at least put the lens on them, but never dedicated a full day to just photographing their routes. Happy to chalk these up, but, like I said, greed is greed, but time is time, and I did not have it at the time. Now time is to regret not more of it!

top...The Katy. One of only two shots of freights on this road.

top...on the way to Chicago, missed seeing this in action

middle...Outside of Kansas City. My only shot of Frisco in action

bottom...Kansas City, and the other end at New Orleans. A couple of shots, but would have loved to have gotten to Rich Mountain or Shrevesport.

All good stuff, Bill, thanks for posting.  I'm trying to place where that Soo Line Shot is.  All I can come up with is Humbolt Yard on the north side of Minneapolis.  It just doesn't look like Shoreham which was on the opposite side of the Mississippi.

I believe that was Humbolt yard. That does sound familiar.

Any idea what year(s) these are from?  Early 1970's maybe?

All but the New England shots were early 70 to around 1977. Katy shot was maybe an 80's shot as well when I looked at it again.

Did you get the opportunity to photograph Milwaukee's Pacific Coast Extension?

I got all over L&N coal country in the late 70s. Ravenna, Loyall, and Corbin were three great areas.

No Milwaukee that far west. That is one of the biggest regrets I mentioned in the commentary.
