SP U25B 6746 leads an SCL slug set testing on SP around the balloon track with an LA hauler at West Colton, CA in January 1978 (M.L. Bosnyak photo, my collection).

Ah yes! The famous GE U36B, with such high horse power they were extremely slippery. The SCL complained to GE, and GE then came up with the "MATE", or Motors for Additional Tractive Effort. Each U36B provided power for one truck on the MATE. All that high HP wasted.

The first group of MATEs, SCL 3200-3209 delivered in 1971, were single-ended, having cabling and fuel hose connections at just one end, as seen here with SCL 3206 at Mulberry FL in June, 1975.

They must have made a good impression since SP went on to build the TEBU's with Boise's assistance.

Well, even for an LA Hauler, I'll have to admit that you definitely struck paydirt with that consist.  Thanks for your post.

Used on the Santa Cruz Branch. Tried to go to Olympia, but a rock slide stopped them. Forwarded to Roseville on the WJRVP and then south to West Colton on the RVWCY. This why you see them at WC

There's a published photo somewhere of them in Tillamook, OR at the end of the branch by the depot.

AFAIK....the SP DD35's and U50D's were typically used on the LA-WC haulers during their last days...when they were running...and mu'd with GP-35's and U25b's seemed to be typical too.    Wish I had gottem mopre pix of them...
