Nostalgia & History > Riding on a N&W S-1 switcherDate: 11/23/22 05:29 Riding on a N&W S-1 switcher Author: PlyWoody https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,5579684
Photo in new link above. My older brother and I were strapped with cameras on the N&W platform at the Roanoke Station where a S-1 0-8-0 switcher was lingering for a call of a job to do. We got talking to the Conductor near the tender for a bit. Then the Conductor said they just had a call to move a car up in the Shop to the north and did we want to go along? My brother said sure but the ride was not in the cab, it was on the rear foot-board of the tender. My brother got on the engineer side and held on so I got on the fireman side next to the Conductor and away we went for several miles. I got some photos of them switching in the shop and then we rode on the trailing platforms of the front of the engine on the return to the station. Talk about making ties with the public, the N&W was a class act of southern hospitality. |
