Wow, I never knew Chessie had a runthrough agreement with BN. Last thing I'd expect to see is a WM F unit coupled to a BN U25C!

All nice photos, the Western Maryland units all have their new CSX numbers, and several of them lasted working those freight trains until 1980.

When you said "in Illinois," I was expecting photos from Barr Yard or somewhere else around Chicago.  Count me among the astonished TO members viewing your post.

Probably units being leased out, I believe that some gp9s were being leased to the Rock Island about that time.

Could be ... all the Chessie units look like GP9's and F units.

These are great! I bet they were a welcome addition wherever they roamed. Being so well maintained and all. I know I would prefer the 7156 on the point vs the filthy U boat!

I believe these were ALL leased units.  The BN was very power short at the time as the Powder River caol traffic had just exploded.  Thanks for posting, Marty.
