Grade Crossing Trifecta
Author: BoilingMan

This might be rare enough to be an only:  Over the years the Lincoln Highway/ US-40/ I-80 has crossed the (now former) Southern Pacific by going across, under, and over it at Emigrant Gap CA (Donner Pass).  All in pretty nearly the same spot too.
I can't think of another example of this.

Probably a fair chance that’s why the photo was taken and, in turn, why we have it today.

Middle photo reminds me of a George R. Stewart classic...

Great series SR, passed that spot many a time growing up, might have seen a train or two there.

I think part of that road in #1 is still there but not longer crosses the tracks.

Nice historic photos.  And interesting across - under - over sequencing.

US 40 went under the UP in Davis, in two different locations.  Now I-80 goes over it, just south of the 2nd former underpass.

the first underpass was constructed in 1917, so it predates US 40.  So the predecessor grade crossing would not have been US 40...

That's fascinating. The railroad ges from double to single, the road goes from single to double.

This area where the RR and the highway over Donner has gone through all manner of changes in the last 100yrs- the juxtaposition of the RR, highway, scenic overlook turnoff, and service station have changed over and over. Photos taken at different times are real mind benders when you try to make sense of them. There are quite a few framed photos on the walls of the gas station at Nyack that are worth a look if you have the time.
