Picture is looking west at Phillipsburg station.  The signals in the background show the semaphores at the junction with the DL&W branch from Washington, NJ.

Reading and CNJ steam were freely mixed back in the day. The cloudy skies make it difficult to guess the time of day and which train this would have been. Ironically, aside from a few small details, you can get almost the exact same image today with an eastbound NS train.

Possibly joint CNJ-RDG train from Harrisburg, PA to Jersey City, NJ.
Note headend cars.

Phillipsburg, NJ CNJ Tower 'PU' controlled interchange switches with CNJ to PRR, CNJ to LV, CNJ to DL&W and CNJ to L&HR.

Station building and restored PU tower still exist. Trackage is now NS Lehigh Line from Allentown, PA to Oak Island/Newark, NJ. PU Tower is in upper LEFT corner photo 1.

Just SE of PU Tower is the Centerville & South Western miniature rr, formerly Becker Farm Railroad. Restored PU Tower, station and railroad are part of Phillipsburg, NJ Railroad Historians. Photos taken 9-9-2022

Reading G3 4-6-2 Atlantic pulling probably the joint CNJ Queen of the Valley.
Nice look back.

Sure is nice to see before and after where there are still tracks, structures and as we see here a "little" bit more!
