Author: refarkas

It is April 3, 1972 in Marshalltown, Iowa where CNW 257 (EMD F3A), 246 (EMD FP7A), and 233 (EMD F3A) are sitting out in the sun.

Thanks for posting this interesting picture.  I think all three are ex-MKT.  Gerry

I had just assumed all of these units were former Chicago Great Western but was surprised to find out all three were originally Missouri Kansas Texas.   When did the CNW pick those up from the MKT and how long did they remain operational?

Interesting image of a place I have only been to once. Heaviest summer rain ever witnessed.

I suspect that if you did the math, Chicago and Northwestern probably had more 2nd hand units than ones they purchased new.

Thanks for the point in that direction.   I had forgotten it was such a great source of CNW info there.

CNW got over 4 years service out of each of these after picking them up from Precision National I'm sure at close to scrap prices.   You have to hand it to the CNW that they found the way to make it trough the difficult 70's in ways like this.
