Nostalgia & History > F-unit Friday: alongside boiling water!Date: 12/02/22 04:18 F-unit Friday: alongside boiling water! Author: santafe199 What a cool slice of UP history! A fairly new yellow & grey F9 rubs shoulders with an old veteran steamer dressed in the usual black. While “X1457” in its number boards tell a tale of work-a-day freight service for the F, the “18” the number boards next door indicates fast, main line passenger service is currently on the menu. What a great time it was to be shooting Uncle Pete’s motive power...
1. UP 1457 rests next to 4-8-4 # 836 in Denver, CO in April of 1957. Photographer is unknown, from the late James W. Watson collection. Thanks for looking back! Indeed it was. As a little kid in the early 1960s this train through my home town (Manhattan) was the first passenger train I ever rode. I guess I should have come down a bit from the flowery caption and mentioned that #17 & #18 were the "Portland Rose". Author: agentatascadero I wonder if steam to diesel (or diesel to steam) at Denver was the usual practice for the Portland Rose in this period?
