Don't try this at home!
Author: santafe199

In fact, don’t even try this out on the high iron. The unpredictable results usually don’t come highly recommended. Beyond the previous 2 sentences I can offer no details about this rather risqué image. At least the sun was shining... ;^)

1. AT&SF 0-8-0(?) 838 is slightly out of kilter in relationship to the rails, much less its own tender. Apparently a foreign actor has violated the 838’s personal space, creating this untoward situation in Kansas City, MO on August 7, 1937.
2¾ x 4½ BW reprint by Wes Krambeck, from the Art Gibson collection.
Soon to be part of the James T. Wilson collection.

Thanks for looking back!

Lance, a good photo I figure at the north end of Chicago Jct. I have this photo and 4 more that go with it. The other engine is a Frisco, they crossed the KCT at Stockyard Crossing. I wonder if one of the crews got a signal wrong. KCRW287

I'm guessing they took 838's headlight off before the big hook went to work.

For what purpose is that arch shaped piece of sheetmetal located next ahead of the headlight on the 838 tender?

Thanks. Dick Wolf was a Gibson contemporary in those days. It’s not surprising to see more than one photographer catching this oopsie. In fact I’d bet that quite a few KC Metro photogs turned out for this one…

Lance, I just found these in a file on the computer this past week, I haven't seen them in a couple of years. I am probably 1/2 thru correcting my files and finding all kinds of stuff, deleting some too. KCRW287

That's a hose reel box.  A lot of Santa Fe tenders for smaller steam locomotives had them:

A few tenders behind preserved Santa Fe steam locomotives still have them, such as:
