My Dad drove me over from the City one night so could get a few night shots as I wasn't even driving yet. Thanks Dad.

What a great dad. What amazes me is your skill at night photography at such a young age. What a great night shot.

And I'll bet there were no Alien Bees! What a wonderful shot and your Dad must have been a great guy! As always, thanks for all the great photos from before the crap settled in.

Great that you were taken here and equipped to take this shot. In 1958 we camped within 100 feet of the WP mainline in rural Nevada. Although I had no camera with me I fully expected to be awakened a few times in the night and see what the WP had to offer to a teenaged railfan. Up at 7 AM and not a single train had passed! Still don’t know whether I slept through them or if it was just a quiet night for trains.

That is one superb B&W photobob.  Curious as to what the light source was between the engines?  Thanks for sharing.

Interesting time for those f-units. Just transitionioning from their as-delivered appearance to early modifications and second paint-jobs. You can just make out the factory painted pilot stripes.

Most likely home made portable light stands. WP used them extensively in Oakland. In this post card you can see one on the left of the engine and another one on the right. These show up in lots of Oakland photos over the years.
