Nostalgia & History > Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79Date: 01/24/23 15:13 Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79 Author: GreenFlag Here's a series of photos of a very late westbound Sunset Limited on 10-3-79. This was at Bryn Mawr on the SP which is near Redlands and east of Colton. This was an unusual catch as it was 115pm in the afternoon and if on time, the train would've passed through here probably before the sun would have been up.
The train has a Southern car which I think is a through sleeper off of the Crescent. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 01/24/23 15:14 Re: Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79 Author: GreenFlag Date: 01/24/23 15:24 Re: Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79 Author: 3rdswitch That is a sizable train, nice catch.

This paint scheme looked far better than the red nose scheme on the SDP40F power. Date: 01/24/23 16:52 Re: Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79 Author: MEKoch I would speculate that the rear seven Amtrak cars are deadheads.

Train consist and arrangement is really weird, but man, SEVEN deadheads! Andy Date: 01/24/23 19:38 Re: Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79 Author: Topfuel MEKoch Wrote:
------------------------------------------------------- > I would speculate that the rear seven Amtrak cars > are deadheads. More than that. That sure looks an awful lot like two Sunset LTD consists together. Plus an ex-Chessie dome sleeper in the 1st consist, and the SP biz car on the rear. Quite an unusual occurrence. I'll bet there was some sort of disruption that caused one consist to be sent back to LA. Definitely more to this story. In the October issue of Rail Travel News; The Sunset Ltd train 1, was annulled at New Orleans on Sep. 28 due to a work stoppage on the Southern Pacific.... That has to be why there were two trains combined! Date: 02/01/23 12:49 Re: Amtrak Sunset Limited at Bryn Mawr, CA '79 Author: GreenFlag Thanks for finding that out about the two trainsets. When I was looking at the slides, I sure thought that it was an especially big train that day.
