Turntables were (are) always built with a substantial bridge single point, two point, or three point suspension, and a deep pit. I can recall only three I have seen, those being:
Livingston, Montana on the MRL, Chicago at the former Rock Island Rocket House, and in several 1950's Lionel catalogs. Additions to this brief list will be appreciated. I took these of the transfer table without fully understanding it. One interesting thing is that the tracks do not line up across the pit. To go from one side to the other the movement must be stopped on the table and the table shifted a few inches before proceeding off to the far side. Note, was fun to see newly constructed railcars being spotted by old Farmall tractors still earning their keep working within the plant. UC |
