Central Kansas Railway
Author: sfbrkmn

At Newton, KS., in May 1998, former Santa Fe  switch eng 2242 arrives with Central Kansas Railway train CKRNEW. The CKRY was created  New Yrs day 1993 when SF sold 900 miles of branchline trackage to the newly formed shortline. From 1980-1992, Santa Fe operated between Newton-McPherson on trackage rights over the Union Pacific, which originally was the western half of Missouri Pacific's El Dorado-McPherson branch. Upon the 1993 takeover, the shortline inherited the rights agreement, operating a tri-weekly McPherson-Newton flip for the purpose of interchanging traffic.                                                      In this scene, the conductor is climbing back on the engine after lining the transfer track switch for the purpose of exiting the UP mainline and will soon enter the BNSF main 1 for a cross town move to Sand Creek yard, drop off the inbound cars, grab the outbounds and return back to McPherson as the NEWCKR.
This photo is on page 70 of my book "Ex Santa Fe: Central Kansas Railway 1993-2001" that is now OOP.
