Did these engines ever pull or push a heavy train over any famous SP grades:  Donner?  Tehachapi?  Beaumont?  Siskiyou?  Cascades?  I look at them and question if they could do it.  Just the trucks look rough riding.  Dynamic brakes installed?  Imagine having these things on a long, downhill  train....

According to "My Espee Modelers Page" these were always classified as switchers, so very doubtful they ever saw road service on the hills.
They also did not have dynamic breaks or MU capability.
This one pictured was the last of four ordered for the T&NO.

About 2/3  of them (which were numbered in the 5200 series on the SP) had dynamic brakes, look at the louvers in the high short hood.
Almost 1/2 of them in the higher numbers had MU, including the Baldwin air throttle.  These would only MU with themselves, and the 12 S12 Baldwin switchers the SP owned, SP 2146-SP 2157.

Look at the SP's former AS 616s when they were on the Trona and the O&NW. There is a picture of an O&NW unit with its SP number still in the number boxes.  SP 5254 I think.
