Nostalgia & History > LIRR FA1 East Williston NY 1979Date: 03/27/23 09:05 LIRR FA1 East Williston NY 1979 Author: erielackawanna I was home from college for winter break and had a beautiful day on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1979. I took the long drive through the city to get to Long Island to shoot some of the Alco FAs that had been rebuilt by GE in North Bergen, NJ, into power packs. This may have been my only time railfanning the LIRR with a car during that era. It was honestly much easier to get there by train. It was also the first time I saw this new livery on the FAs. In this image, an FA1, LIRR #611, trails on train #508 to Oyster Bay. My notes say image is north of East Williston, New York station. Charles Freericks photograph.

I grew up with the LIRR Port Jefferson branch visible from the back windows of the house and a half mile from a grade crossing. I remember the 611 had such a great horn that was different from any other horns on the LIRR. Don't know the type of horn but maybe someone will remember what type the SP&S had on it.

I thought most of that equipment had been relocated for 'clean-up' purposes. jb Date: 03/27/23 17:49 Re: LIRR FA1 East Williston NY 1979 Author: Kemacprr Nope no longer in Winslow Jct. All the FA/FB units and cabin were moved years ago to the W&W in Bridgeton. Right now one FA-2 is at SMS. --- Ken
