What is the protrusion ahead of the fuel tank on these locomotives? Thanks for posting.

Marty - thanks for the great Missabe photos.  Especially like the shot at Ely, as it shows the Pioneer Mine in the background.  The Pioneer Mine was served by the DM&IR and was still working at the time of the photo, but closed the following year (1967).  After it closed and the water pumps were turned off, the area between the railroad and the mine filled with water and is now known as Miners Lake.  The Pioneer Mine structures were preserved and are now part of a museum and tour site.  DM&IR served numerous mines in the Ely area.  The mines closed once the higher quality ore was mined out, and the DM&IR line to Ely and Winton was abandoned in the early 1980's.

I believe that those were weights to ballast the engines down more.

I noticed the 'bay window' extentions on the locomotives. Are these unique to this road?
Were they to intended afford better vision during switching/dumping?
TIA!

I never get tired of seeing DMIR posts. I don't see as much on here as I would think. One of the best RR heralds ever.
