Santa Fe color on Curtis Hill. May, 1995.

1. A W/B Santa Fe manifest (R) has stopped in the siding to let a hot TOFC train (L) pass on the main. The crew from GP35-2829 has stepped off to give it a roll-by inspection. GP60Ms 136 & 120, with GP60-4014 & B40-8W-542 are leading the TOFC. 5:02PM on 5-18-95 in Quinlan, OK.

     Excellent photo!  I was likely dispatching the Santa Fe's Panhandle desk that day on second trick; this photo appears to have
been taken mid day on first.  Quinlan siding was the very WORST place on the Division to hold westward trains, especially manifest drags which usually had miniscule horsepower per ton.
 
     Once during UPS Peak Season I was instructed to have a westbound take siding there; upon departure it stalled half way out on the main.  An epic backlog of traffic in both directions resulted which took hours to clear.  You could survive meets at Heman, Belva and Curtis, but at Quinlan you could usually count on trouble.

     Update:  The stall at Quinlan occured not long after UPS Peak Season concluded.  Nonetheless, it was still a big deal.
 A few days later at our Op Center holiday party, I met one of our operations executives who asked me what in the world
happened at Quinlan the other day.  I explained and advised him that it will likely occur again.  A few weeks later the Curtis Hill double tracking project resumed, which had been put on hold indefinitely months earlier.
