When Tropical Storm (former Hurricane) Agnes hit the Maryland area, the Patapsco River overflowed in many places including downtown Ellicott City, and this line was out of service for several years. The Chessie System Management had considered abandoning most of the line; however with all the traffic congestion on the main line they realized that they needed to repair the "Old Main Line" once again, a wise decision for sure.
