Looking for Book advice - Old Time Railroading
Author: train1275

Does anyone have any book recommendations focusing on early years of railroading such as an early history of Illinois Central or something related to various rolling stock used pre-1900 ?

Looking for history and photos, especially of rolling stock, track and facilities as opposed to locomotives.

Thanks for any help.

The Pennsy Triumph series has an abundant selection of 1850s-1940s railroad right of way construction and buildings.

Same with Van Horne's Road about the CPR

On the Main Line, by Edwin Alexander is an excellent pictoral work illustrating the Pennsylvania Railroad line from New York and Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.  It also includes the Pennsylvania Railroad's other eastern lines such as the Cumberland Valley Railroad and Philadelphia & Erie Railroad.  There are many photos of the railroad, tunnels, bridges, stations and towers.

Impossible Challenge II by Herbert Harwood is about the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad from Baltimore to Washington and Harpers Ferry from 1828 to 1994.  This book has plenty of narrative and is well illustrated with photographs and maps including the pre-1900 era.

Neither book has many photos of freight and passenger cars.
