Penn Central 5956
Author: MartyBernard

The Pennsylvania RR and then the Penn Central operated two commuter trains called dummys in the morning from Valparaiso, Indiana to Chicago and return in the evening. Here is one of the Geeps (5956, a GP7) that powered the trains in the early afternoon of March 30, 1971. Its steam generator is building steam. The shot is from the Roosevelt Road Viaduct in Chicago. The passenger cars look like they could be some of those commuter cars.

Thanks for posting this great pic of the boiler equipped PC GP.  The background equipment provide rich detail.

This GP is steam generator equipped, but it is not a torpedo boat with the air tanks on top. I wonder where they placed the water tank for the steam genny and is the tank smaller than torpedo boats?  Is this a factory built placement or did the railroad add a steam generator later on?

Yes, the tanks are smaller than a torpedo-tube unit. Judging from the tank profile, this has side-saddle water tanks with a smaller, unseen fuel tank between them. This is a short distance passenger locomotive and just right for commuter service.

Nice overall scene. Even the P70's are looking pretty good.
