Soda Springs Sunday - SP Weekend Warriors Westbound With Coal

From the mid 1980s when a weekend trip to Donner usually was rewarded with seeing 
most of the 2nd generation SP commute power working in freight service.
Took this in Spring 1986 at Soda Springs, Californis, just west of Donner Summit.
SDP45s 3205 & 3206 had the nicest sounding Nathan M5 horns originally installed
on the FM H-24-66 commute locos.

Looks like the "dirty" helper crew wasn't allowed to scuff up the cab of the SD45s only the SD9.

Spring of 1986 was good time for Donner. UP was detouring as well as they tried to get their washed out line thru the Feather River rebuilt. The UP detours required cabs over SP and UP scrambled to find working ones (with radios). They even borrowed some from CNW until Espee banned them.

Very nice video and memories.

Could have been coal for either cement plant at Santa Cruz and or Permanente.
