Nostalgia & History > Beech Grove Tour - 1976Date: 09/05/24 14:00 Beech Grove Tour - 1976 Author: MEKoch About 1975-77 I took a tour of Beech Grove. Walter Barrick was the general manager with 700 employees. They gave each of us a booklet about the facility. I am reproducing the eight pages for TO.
I do not know the changes in 50 years to the facility. It says they were producing six cars per week. I hope some of you on TO can add to this tour. As a note of interest, at that time, 1976,
cars to/from Beech Grove were deadheaded on 30 & 31, National Limited. Date: 09/05/24 16:37 Re: Beech Grove Tour - 1976 Author: Hou74-76 I made the tour in December 1975. Thanks for saving this booklet. If I got one I did not hold on to it.
Here are some photos from that tour: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4743917,4743932#4743932 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4743291,4743291#4743291 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4742796,4742796#4742796 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4743146,4743146#4743146 As I recall I was in the second batch of Amtrak Mechanical employees to take the tour. It was also a "train-rider" school for traveling electricians. When we got to the HVAC lesson, somebody asked about what to do with steam ejector ACs. Long story short, I ended up teaching the group about them and how to fix them on the road. i realized then that Beach Grove would probably refuse to repair or rebuild one. Edited 5 time(s). Now, you need to post ALL the pictures you took during the tour : ) Date: 09/05/24 17:39 Re: Beech Grove Tour - 1976 Author: GreenFlag Interesting post, thanks for sharing. A friend and I who worked for Amtrak at the time, were able to get permission to go into Beach Grove Shops in 1978 where we made our own "tour" on a weekend day, but only the outside stuff. Haven't' scanned those slides yet.
