Nostalgia & History > Milwaukee Road: Like the mighty wind, the Hiawatha...Date: 09/18/24 05:48 Milwaukee Road: Like the mighty wind, the Hiawatha... Author: Redwater Here are three photos from my collection, photographers unknown. The Hiawatha trains were fast, sometimes reaching speeds over 100MPH historically. Here are three photos with Hiawatha with steam power.

photo looks like a Westbound "Hiawatha" East of La Crosse, WI. That would be the C&NW line to Rapid City, SD behind the train. I am placing this near Camp McCoy, WI. Thanks for sharing the significant photos. SR2 Date: 09/18/24 16:12 Re: Milwaukee Road: Like the mighty wind, the Hiawatha... Author: refarkas Excellent set - Great photos.

The first photo is taken from the C&NW Air Line truss bridge just South of Techny, Illinois. I've seen this photo before and believe it was one of a series of staged photos by a photagrapher employed by the Milwaukee Road just before the Hiawathas started service in 1935. The train was stopped for this photo and a couple others. Notice the Chromed wings on the front that evolved into the diesel era on many railroads. These were the first of the Wings, that UP still uses today. I know the guy that owns the number plate in the middle of the wings. Above the locomotive is the the track coming down from the C&NWs Air Line that came from Proviso yard. That track was also used by the Milw. Road from Bennsenville yard to merge with the Milwaukees C&M mainline at Techny , Illinois at Tower A-20. I grew up here and played on this bridge and tracks regularly. I lived in Northbrook, about a mile away.
The F-7 4-6-4s were my favorites. Only six were ever made, and I'm lucky to own the bell from No. 105. Craig Hanson Vay, Idaho |
