AMTK GE E60 965 built June 1975 westbound at Rye, NY, no caption, slide says Oct. 1975. Bill Howes photos, Reid Adams collection Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/18/24 19:21 by MartyBernard. Date: 09/18/24 20:24 Re: Amtrak Roll By of GE E60 965 and Train at Rye, NY Author: mvrr10 Note that the first two Amfleet cars still have the fixed vestibule steps and arrows at both ends , the next two feature fold up vest. steps and one arrow at the "B" end of the cars. Amfleet entered BOS-WAS service in August 1975. Great shots!

I always wondered how NH handled the change of catenary construction. Quite simple actually.

The main reason was the snow that would get packed on the steps enroute, the folding steps reduced the snow on the steps . Vestibules could be feet deep in snow if the door seals on the vest,. side doors wasn' t working properly. Suspect snow is still a headache during winter; the Amfleet II equipment did not seem to as cursed as the Amfllet Is.

------------------------------------------------------- > Does that mean no triangle catenary east of here? The triangular catenary went as far as Stamford. I would guess that the section of non-triangular catenary seen here was a short stretch, maybe done when that US 1 overhead bridge at the east end of the station was built. Of course, all that triangular catenary is gone now, replaced with constant-tension catenary by Metro-North. Jim |
