Does anyone remember the 3985?
Author: santafe199

Here are 2 more great slide scans from Len Kratz. I really like the way he used his telephoto in these mostly head-on views. Very well done...

1. UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger 3985 in glorious motion on Cajon on May 21, 1994.

2. An additional performance on May 24, 1994. “Long Live the 3985!”
Two original slides by the late Mr Len Kratz. From the late Gary Rich collection.

Thanks for remembering!

Thanks for posting those Lance.  The late PV owner, Rod Basich, and I were in the first dome in the first row on the right side during that very enjoyable day.  My wife was pregnant with our twin sons, Martin and James, but was not allowed to accompany me by our pre-natal doctor -- she gave birth 3 weeks later.  Today at 30 years of age, Martin is Director of Railroad Operations at CSRM and James is MOW Supervisor and an engineer at PSRM in Campo, CA (when he is not otherwise occupied as Director of Instrumental Music and Marching Band at Dana Hills HS in Dana Point).

Yep, I was on the chase that day in Cajon pass, remember it well. Don't know where the pictures are videos are, but I remember taking them and spending the day, both in the morning and afternoon. Great times.

Not to mention those handsome E9s. Haven't seen those run in a while. Shame, as I don't think ANYONE would be complaining about them being the diesel helpers behind the UP steamers.

Those Pacific Limited excursions in the early-to-mid 90s were a true golden age for the UP steam program. A shame skyrocketing insurance costs have ruined it all.
