UP 3760 STBR at James [1988]

UP 3760 East ducks under Hwy 70, runs around the mountain via horseshoe thru Tunnel #4 and reappears to duck under 70 one more time. Former Western Pacific Feather River Canyon.Train has a good mix of Santa Fe and Burlington Northern cars and a working caboose. Probably one of the few road trains anywhere on the UP system still requiring the use of a caboose, excluding locals.

Apologies for the few tape streaks but VHS eventually wears out.

Nice look back. Wonder if this was the train that went up the Inside Gateway thus the caboose?

Yes, you're correct about going north to Bieber on the NCE. This train usually came out of Oroville yard with a fresh crew and handled any local work (sometimes company work cars between Oroville and Keddie) and then worked Crescent Mills and Clear Creek Jct for Collins Pine. BN was still upset with the 1982 UP-MP-WP merger and would not honor a former GN-WP run through or pool power. So UP had to turn its power back at Bieber. If my memory is correct, UP had this line shutdown several times due to tunnel fires. It really is a good thing that BNSF got ahold of the line because UP was never interested in the former WP highline.

I'm still amazed that I was able to huff and puff (jog uphill) along Hwy 70 to catch it again at the 2nd overpass. I believe these overpasses have protection fencing and a lot of trees now.
