Nostalgia & History > A classic Midwest scene from 1965Date: 10/30/24 07:42 A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: rbenko In the summer of 1965, a CSS&SB train sits at what has been identified to me as Hammond, IN. I'm not a car guy but the Pontiac (model?) and the Chevy Impala really add to the scene. Looking on Google Maps, I don't see anything familiar left at Hammond - neither the station, the cool brick building in the background, nor the awesome neon "South Shore Line" sign (isn't that preserved somewhere?) no longer exist. Photo was taken by my father, Stephen J. Benkovitz.
Thanks for viewing. Rob Benkovitz West Palm Beach, Florida Date: 10/30/24 07:49 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: ClubCar That's a terrific scene for sure of the good ole days. Thanks for sharing the photo with all of us.

Regards, Jim Evans Date: 10/30/24 08:59 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: Roadmaster The street is Hohman Avenue and the brick building is the American Savings and Loan Association in North Hammond, IN. That building was on the northeast corner of the Hohman Ave. crossing of the CSS&SB. Looking at the Historic Aerials site, it appears the AS&LA building was torn down somewhere between 1981 and 1984; a new CSS&SB station was built to the southeast of the station in Mr. Benkovitz's photo between 1988 and 1998, and the CSS&SB was realigned through this part of the town during that same time period.
Here are coordinates for the Hohman Avenue crossing of the CSS&SB: 41.631078,-87.5173266 Here is another photo taken at that location; more of the AS&LA building is visible: https://www.american-rails.com/images/SS100WBHammond.jpg Matthew Date: 10/30/24 09:24 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: rbenko Roadmaster Wrote:

Thanks for the additional info! Date: 10/30/24 09:25 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: Gonut1 The USPS box is now a rarity and the phone booth I believe is extinct. Nice look back.

Larry Date: 10/30/24 10:17 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: thebluecomet Beautiful scene of 1960's Americana. I believe that's a 1962 Chevy Impala. The '63 version dropped one of the tail lights. The mailbox and phone booth add to this classic time machine wish.

Date: 10/30/24 11:04 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: MartyBernard I took basically the same photo on January 27, 1964. I like the phone booth in each photo.
Marty Bernard Date: 10/30/24 11:33 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: stevelv I was there in the first photo. I don't remember because I was only 3 and most likely sitting or sleeping in the back seat of my Dad's Fiat while he took the shot.

Here's another angle from the same trip - BTW what exactly is/was a "Chef-o-Mat"? Was it a type of Automat? Date: 10/30/24 12:13 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: swaool I think the third automobile (partially obscured) is a 1965 Olds Dynamic 88 coupe. Dave L. (who you may remember) had a similar Delta 88 for awhile that we took a few railfan trips in. Had a big 425 V8.

I think you are very close. The one thing I see that makes me think it is a Jetstar 88 is the piece of trim that curves up at the top of the rear fender. Best as I can tell, the Dynamics and Deltas lacked that piece of trim. https://classiccarcatalogue.com/OLDSMOBILE_1965.html Matthew Date: 10/30/24 13:44 Re: A classic Midwest scene from 1965 Author: vjb4877 At the Illinois Railroad Museum they have a North Shore sign and I am sure they also have a South Shore sign because I have never complained about them NOT having one! Jean Shepherd I am sure identified his stories about Hammond as Hohman and might have located Hohman in Ohio but who can keep track of all these goody connections?!!
