SP Westbound crew change and Amtrak at SB
Author: choochoochas

A Westbound Southern Pacific train is stopped at State Street in Santa Babara California for a crew change with GP35 #6536 on the point. Also the Amtrak Coast Starlight Eastbound is stopped at the station as the conductor checks to see if everyone has either gotten on or off of the train. Then a shot as the Westbound freight leaves SB from the station.

A rolling crew change on the caboose of the Westbound train at the Santa Barbara Station on SP's Coast Route.

Those are some great shots with the railroaders in them. Getting on a moving caboose with one hand and your grip in the other, not the easiest thing.

The guy in the blue shirt sure looks like Doug Walker, an LA fireman/engineer on what was then the San Joaquin Division Engineers Seniority Board.

At the time SJD engineers from LA only went as far west, on the Coast, as Santa Barbara. In late 1972 the SB crew change was eliminated and SJD engineers ran through to San Luis Obispo.

The train is likely the "GGM". Typical 4 axal power and boxcars that went west through Santa Barbara in the afternoon.
