Nostalgia & History > A Southern DeadlineDate: 11/28/24 17:05 A Southern Deadline Author: srman I August 1986 after visiting family in Atlanta on my way home I made a stop at Chattanooga's Debutts yard and found a long line of retired SD35's.
The 2993 was a former Central of Georgia 218 built January 1966. Then in April 1989 I made another stop and found a bunch of GP30's and 35's. One locomotive in particular caught my eye. Southern SD7 197 was their only SD7 that was formerly Central of Georgia 201 and built in May 1953. Seems like they pulled the fuel tanks and traction motors off most of the units. Were those traded in or put in storage for their own fleet?
Dave Date: 11/28/24 19:17 Re: A Southern Deadline Author: NYSWSD70M Norfolk Southern used fuel tanks off of SD35's to replace the small (1700 gallon) tanks on the "original" Norfolk Southern GP38's. Not sure if they did this on other units as well

When I came to Southern in 73, there were only a few trains that rated 6-axle power that didn't have one or more SD35's on them. The renumbered engines pictured wound up with Scotchlite numbers and the older Scotchcal lettering and striping.
