Nostalgia & History > Raymond & Fremont, New Hampshire, 1/6/25Date: 01/07/25 17:20 Raymond & Fremont, New Hampshire, 1/6/25 Author: GPutz My sister-in-law and brother-in-law suggested that we have lunch at the Tuckaway Tavern and Butchery in Raymond (everybody loves it). I had already found on Google Maps a railway station in Raymond, and they agreed to indulge me with a stop there. Along the way my sister-in-law spotted another railway station in Fremont, and we agreed to stop there on the way back to her home.
Raymond 1.This is the view as you turn off Main Street onto Depot Street. The station was built in 1893 by the Concord & Portsmouth Railroad. On 6/29/1895 management of the route went to Boston & Maine. B&M achieved complete ownership in 1945, and the Concord & Portsmouth dissolved. In 1982 the track between Rockingham Junction and East Manchester closed and is now owned by the state of New Hampshire and managed as the Rockingham Recreational Trail. The Manchester to East Manchester segment was operated as an industrial spur and saw rail service until 1994. It was abandoned in 1995. The remaining section from Rockingham Junction to Portsmouth is now operated by CSXT. 2 & 3. This standard gauge gas Whitcomb 20T, built 2//39 for the City of Cincinnati, was purchased by the Raymond Historical Society in 1997. 4. B&M caboose #432, built in 1939, was restored in 2020. 5 & 6. NYC/MDT refrigerator car #12257 was built in 1953. Gerry ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 01/07/25 17:29 Re: Raymond & Fremont, New Hampshire, 1/6/25 Author: GPutz Raymond
7. This Woodings motorcar was built in 1944. I never saw one of these before this day. It’s aerodynamic, so it must be very fast. 8 & 9. Two more views of the station Gerry ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 01/07/25 17:30 Re: Raymond & Fremont, New Hampshire, 1/6/25 Author: GPutz Fremont
10 & 11. I don’t have any information about this station. The Town of Fremont has a web page for the Fremont Historical Museum, but there is no mention of this station there. It’s on a branch of the Rockingham Recreational Trail between Epping, seven miles east of Raymond, and Windham, about 25 miles southwest of Epping. The trail is on a railroad RoW, probably ultimately B&M. There is another station existing on this line at Sandown. I’ll try to get there next summer. Notice the similarity between the B&M caboose and PRR class N5b models?
