EMD GP35 Demonstrators
Author: skokieswift

Hello:

I know the GP35 demonstrators are mostly associated with being in an ABBA set of GP35/DD35B/DD35B/GP35 but I would like to know if the GP35 demos went out on thier own without the DD35s. Can anyone tell me what railroads single GP35 demonstrated on if any?  Everything I've found so far shows them paired up in the ABBA set or on display at a trade show type event; haven't found any photos of one mixed in a consist.

Thanks in advance,

SkokieSwift.

I was assigned to the EMD GP35/DD35 (note that there is no 'B' in the DD35 model designation) Demonstrator tour, and the only railroad we were on without the two DD35 units was the New Haven RR. And that was for only one trip I think.

Somewhere I have seen a shot of the two units in Binghamton on the EL without the DD35's.  Can't remember where.

Thanks for jogging my memory, as it's been more than 60 years, and you are correct on the point that we only had the GP35s on the EL.

The cab units are classified as   DDA35    the cabless units are DD35     Just to clarify.

No. The "cab units", ordered by the UP were designated DD35A, since the DD35 model already existed, the cab was a modification add-on, thus  model "DD35A".

That is true.

As additional historic information, the famous Union Pacific 6900 class DDA40X, were so designated since they were a "new model", with Experimental" components, thus the added-on "X".

Thank you to everyone who responded. I did not know that they pretty much stayed with the DD35s.  Wish somebody would make this set in HO scale.

Great discussion about very interesting power.  Thanks for all the information.  Everything about demo units is always appreciated.
