The Disney Daylight was SP 4449 and a short train run from Portland to L.A. for the filming of "Tough Guys" in March 1986. A Roger Puta Photograph Edited 3 time(s). Bob Date: 02/06/25 16:59 Re: SP 4449 With the Disney Daylight Author: johnw While working in engine service for SP I got called off the San Francisco extra board to be pilot fireman on the Oakland to San Luis Obispo southbound portion of this trip. The late WIll Hastings was the pilot engineer. It was a unique opportunity for us diesel guys to observe mainline steam operation first hand. 4449 Engineer Doyle McCormack and the rest of the 4449 crew couldn't have been nicer.
Will and I deadheaded back to Oakland that same night on the second unit of a freight train, arriving in Oakland about 2:00 AM Sunday morning. Combined with a couple of deaheads between San Franciso and Oakland, that gave us a quite a nice paycheck for that one day's work. It was one of those days on the railroad that I'll always fondly remember. I would guess somewhere between Minnow and Fields, Oregon, given the type of trees and other topography included in the field of view. Nothing specific comes to my mind... but given the passage of a few years, maybe not so surprising. I don't think it is south ("west") of Crescent Lake, though, given all of the Fir trees. Cruzatte may be a possibility, but the sun angle doesn't seem quite right. If a helper was added at Oakridge, that would cut-out most of Willamette Pass.
