Nostalgia & History > the last e unit ever made by Bill Marvel on the perchDate: 04/15/25 00:04 the last e unit ever made by Bill Marvel on the perch Author: dan 914 a 2.5 year old e9 at this point...Don Strack wrote; UP 914 was sold to Amtrak 419 in May 1971; retired by Amtrak by 1980; sold to Precision National Corp., Mount Vernon, Illinois, in June 1981; scrapped. also equipped with ATS for Cajon pass. I wish it would have survived longer it was among the last E units on the SFZ active. Long and heavy, for those 2 UPe's and 1 Milw , even a 1963 budd rpo is looks like he is lining up for a trip thru Harriman on track 3 perhaps?
lifted from railpics Bill wrote "Peak summer travel season has begun, and Union Pacific’s combined City of Los Angeles-San Francisco is running in two sections, one to accommodate first-class travelers and a second for the coach trade. At 10:50 am on June 22, 1965, E9A 914 leads all-sleepers 1-103 past Tower A for the climb over Sherman Hill. First call for lunch will be issued shortly, and passengers will begin to move toward the dome diner, seen mid-train. In the evening, the train will perform an amoeba-like division in Ogden, Utah, one section proceeding via SP’s Overland Route as the City of San Francisco, the other continuing on UP rails to Los Angeles. A landmark for years at the west end of Cheyenne yards, Tower A will someday be immortalized in an unpainted Overland Models brass kit, still widely sought by collectors. Note also another luxury mode of travel just past the tower: the classic Airstream trailer parked by the side of the highway." pic 2 by steve patterson Barely three months old, U.P. E9A 914 (THE LAST E UNIT BUILT -- Jan. 1964) stands ready with three mates at Ogden, Utah station to take U.P.'s nameless Train No. 5 to Los Angeles on April 20, 1964. Note old original winged herald with all three words -- Union Pacific Railroad. (Agfachrome film) pic 3 also by Steve may 71 chian Edited 3 time(s).
