Nostalgia & History > Toss Back Tuesday - Joliet, IllinoisDate: 04/15/25 04:44 Toss Back Tuesday - Joliet, Illinois Author: refarkas These two images were next to each other on a strip of 120 roll film black and white negatives. What a contrast could be seen in railfanning Joliet, Illinois in early April 1972!
1) Santa Fe 3145 on the point of a local. 2) A Chicago-bound Amtrak passenger train with the ex-Burlington Silver Tower as its observation car. Bob Edited 1 time(s). JB Date: 04/15/25 05:09 Re: Toss Back Tuesday - Joliet, Illinois Author: Espee1212 My first railfan photos were taken at those locations in Joliet in ‘71/‘72. Unfortunately they were on a 110 instamatic.

-John Date: 04/15/25 07:09 Re: Toss Back Tuesday - Joliet, Illinois Author: ironmtn Two fine shots. The Silver Tower was my favorite of all of the ex-Burlington dome-parlor-observation cars, it and sister Silver Patio were typically assigned to the Chicago - KC Kansas City Zephyr, the daytime schedule between those two cities. Ccounterpart American Royal Zephyr held down the overnight duties, with a similar cars..
Nice shot of Silver Tower at Joliet during the Amtrak "rainbow era".It's still around, and is for sale by Ozark Mountain Railcar. Looking okay outside from the photos on the website, but very shabby inside. MC Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/15/25 07:15 by ironmtn. Perhaps a delivery to the GM&O at South Joliet. The GM&O and ATSF tracks in the plant were actually joint tracks so perhaps it was just off the normal route. |
