Nostalgia & History > Toss Back Tuesday - ELDate: 06/09/25 23:50 Toss Back Tuesday - EL Author: refarkas (Redo) Here is the only shot I have of an EL freight on a bridge crossing over the B&O in Akron, Ohio. It is September 1973, and I am at the B&O's engine facility in Akron. This shot of a common occurrence brings a special smile to me. At least I have one image.

I've seen plenty of EL images, but can't recall anyone else having a photo of this bridge. That EL lash up is also great, two builders and four models, so typical of the EL in that era.

JG Date: 06/10/25 08:07 Re: Toss Back Tuesday - EL Author: randgust There was a rather steep 'ramp track' interchange that went uphill from the B&O valley line, crossed N. Arlington, and connected the lower B&O up to the E-L alignment. In 1993 we looked at this as a way to possibly get CVSR downtown, on the old EL ROW. But that 'hill' would have been so steep and slow we even considered a slug unit. You can only see this track if you hunt up old USGS maps, but the scar of it is still visible in the southwest quadrant.
In the end CVSR decided to quit while they were ahead and build a depot on Ridge St. instead of trying this one, but I was always intrigued by this, and it gave me the opportunity to walk the old EL main all the way downtown. I'd never realized there were diamonds there to cross from one side to the other until suddenly you realize you're out of room, B&O had crossed EL at University Ave (JO tower) and by Conrail era B&O had realigned. Can't get there from here. JO was just a fascinating downtown mainline crossing situation. https://northamericaninterlockings.com/images/joOhorosziInside.jpg?478 And when I was there the ex-B&O tower at N. Arlington was still very much alive, too. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/10/25 08:15 by randgust. Date: 06/10/25 10:51 Re: Toss Back Tuesday - EL Author: Ritzville Excellent catch!
