Can you orient me regarding just where the SD&AE yard office lay in relation to the the other elements in your photo? That engine house is where I had my first occasion to meet D.J. Russell; the morning he made an inspection of the road to El Centro, in early January 1963. Larry Date: 07/05/25 11:05 Re: SD&AE San Diego yard 45 years ago Author: hotrail The 4004 is an interesting and somewhat rare locomotive. Glad it ended up at the PSRM in Campo, CA. Hopefully there will be funds for restoration some day.

Here's a shot of the 4004 in it's original Southern Pacific paint scheme about to head into Bayshore Yard near Visitacion in June 1974. Greg Stadter Phoenix, AZ ![]() Date: 07/06/25 11:42 Re: SD&AE San Diego yard 45 years ago Author: 2720 cewherry Wrote:

The SD&AE yard office is out of the photo to the left of the large San Diego Refrigerated Services building. It later became the SD&AE office when Kyle operated the SD&AE and then the SDIV office. > > That engine house is where I had my first occasion > to meet D.J. ex NWP tank car over the top of the Mopac boxcar behind the 4004 are both part of the collection of SDRM at Campo, CA. I prepped the tankcar for movement to Campo. It had been used for fuel storage for the SD&AE on a short stub of the turntable, located behind the enginehouse. I worked for National Projects Inc. a subsidiary of the old Morrison- Knudsen Construction Company back in 1991. We tore down the enginehouse and relocated the turntable out to it's present location alongside Harbor Drive. We were rebuilding a portion of the SD&AE yard for more storage tracks for the SD Trolley and the Coaster equipment, along with rebuilding some of the freight tracks. We were also doing a job rebuilding portions of the Santa Fe 22nd Street yard on the west side of Harbor drive. Do you recall any of those 5 yard tracks in the foreground of Alan's photo (with the 4004) that were named the "Cotton" track? While working the afternoon yard job with Ralph Carnahan, Ralph would have me in the engineer's seat of our 5100 class GE while we struggled valiantly to kick-out cars stored on that track. Lots of noise but the uphill grade severely limited our ability to kick more than one or two cars before drifting back northward to make another "kick". Great memories. Charlie |
