Amtrak for a KCMO location?
Author: santafe199

I feel like I should know this Kansas City location but I just can’t place it. This train is obviously not the SW Chief, so I’m thinking this is somewhere east of KCUS. If this is the St Louis train making its ‘turn-around’ west of KCUS I sure don’t recognize the angle...

1. AMTK 20 is rolling through Sheffield* in Kansas City, MO(?) in July of 2007.

Thanks for the help!

Wow I saw KCMO and had something completely different in mind.   Kansas Cit Mexico and Orient!    As a HO modeler and obvious ATSF guy I have several KCMO steam locos, one even done!   A PFM Russian Decapod dolled lup as KCMO.   I did not do the Russia speck diesel style handrails along the catwalks.

The Amtrak train is westbound on the Kansas City Terminal at KCT Tower 8/Sheffield Junction alongside the Sheffield flyover in the eastern part of Kansas City.

This is an westbound train on the Kansas City Terminal at Sheffield, about to cross UP's ex-Mopac Coffeyville Sub (which is 2 tracks).  The signals in the distance are for the KCS crossing (which is 1 track.)  The train is on the bridge over the Blue River.  The flyover is on the north side of the ground-level tracks through this area, and then curves over to the south of the ground level trackage just west of the KCS crossing.

(EDIT:  westbound in my head, and I typed "eastbound".   No more posting today.....)

It would have to be a westbound. As Ted noted, “The flyover is on the north side of the ground-level tracks through this area”.

I wasn't aware you could still access that area? What a great place in the seventies. Please forgive my tresspassing your post but couldn't resist this shot of the westbound Super C about to cross the then MP from almost exactly the same spot in '74. Quite the difference of decades.

I’m away from my place, downtown to watch the Royals’ game. I will keep a close eye on this thread, though. The only thing I can add is the sun angle on the train heavily suggests a westbound movement. Other than that, in 2007 I was deep in the middle of my 23 year stint with MRL up in the Big Sky…

It seems we have now all agreed on the train's direction. ;^) But I didn't recognize the location as being Sheffield. All the various Kansas City flyovers were built long after I left Kansas in (1987). So this flyover threw me off. Even so, I regret I only visited Sheffield maybe a couple of times in the '70s & '80s...

Thanks for the help, guys!
Lance
