Southern Pacific and a Signal for Sunday
Author: swaool

An eastbound coal train works upgrade at the east end of Woodford (CA) siding, just below the Loop, on 12/23/96.  SP 113 later became UP 6220.

Guess the off-center signals show this isn't the original end of the siding. Extended 1960s? Wx4 timetables would show.

All? coal that climbed Tehachapi eastward had already climbed Donner westward.

The Woodford extension was done in 1975 according to Signor's book.

As a regular Engineer in the Roseville to Bakersfield pool I worked many of these trains between those two terminals. Before the AC's showed up, and not counting helpers that were cut out in Roseville after coming over Donner we would go with 5 units on the head end of various models of SD45's or SD40's to Bakersfield (289 mile pool). When the AC's showed up we ran 3x0 down the valley. The two symbols were either SNTAC going to Trona or UTLBC going to Long Beach for export. I am pretty sure this train is one of those two symbols.
