1. We took a tour of the brewery, and I spotted this one: CORX SW8 #993 built 8//51 as Cincinnati Union Terminal #34. While in Denver I secured a job there starting in September. Stay tuned. 5. While driving from Rollins to Jackson, WY, on US-287 we found this station, the west end of the C&NW at East Main and North 1st Streets. The tracks are gone now, but the station is visible on Google Satellite and Street Views in Jaycee Park. Monida Pass, Idaho, 7/21/73 6. While driving north on I-15 we overtook this UP coal train. With five units up front. Look at the right edge of the picture and you can see exhaust from helpers. 7. As the headend units slowly passed, I thought the second and third units were an SD40 + an SD45. Later, I was surprised to find they were both prototype SD40s on SD35 frames (aka: SD40X) #3047, built 4//65 as EMDX #434H, to UP #3047 2//66, retired 5//85, + #3040, built 2//65 as EMDX #434A, to UP #3040 2//66, retired 8//86. 8 & 9. CMSTP&P (MILW) EF-2 #E45B + 2 more units, built in 1915 by ALCo/GE when the pacific extension was under construction; 10. The northbound UP coal train on the Montana line is interesting. Not sure where it would have been going unless it was interchanged to BN. The East Glacier photo's bring back memories from visits there in '75 and '76. I recall it being kinda slow, train wise, during the day, busier at night. Mostly EMD's for power, but one westbound was all GE's (2 U33C's, 2 U25B's). Bob Date: 09/03/25 12:03 Re: Summer of ’73, Part 5, Golden, CO, to East Glacier, MT Author: x6924w The "coal" train is the Stauffer Ore train that ran from Pocatello to the Stauffer plant west of Silver Bow. The ore came from the Soda Springs area east of Pocatello. You can see the exhaust of the helpers that were in the train that would have usually been removed at Monida. Here is some YT video of this train from Ogden Union Station archives: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TmfVr6heCU&list=PLtGyUETEAgqSskUKj_XdKPyxe8cZdYQlA&index=20.
Lots of neat videos there. Date: 09/03/25 16:49 Re: Summer of ’73, Part 5, Golden, CO, to East Glacier, MT Author: Keith_Kevet x6924w Wrote:

I had forgotten about the ore train to Stauffer. TY. A do recall the Potash/Soda Ash trains (Potash I believe). It was a UP/BN operation that also may have included CP. The loads and empties ran over Monida and Mullan Passes (UP/BN). Keith_Kevet Posted from Android Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/03/25 18:37 by Keith_Kevet.
