Nostalgia & History > Penn Central GP7 5856 With an Easy JobDate: 11/03/25 16:25 Penn Central GP7 5856 With an Easy Job Author: MartyBernard The Pennsylvania RR and then the Penn Central operated two commuter trains called dummys in the morning from Valparaiso, Indiana to Chicago and return in the evening. Here is one of the Geeps (5956, a GP7) that powered the trains in the early afternoon of March 30, 1971. Its steam generator is building steam. The shot is from the Roosevelt Road Viaduct in Chicago. The passenger cars look like they could be some of the commuter cars.
Date: 11/03/25 20:40 Re: Penn Central GP7 5856 With an Easy Job Author: mvrr10 Nice photo , that coach to the left of the 5856 is one of the six that PCTC bought for the "Broadway" in 1970 from the UP . They stayed as 44 seat coaches under PC but the leg rests were removed so as to be able to spin the seats easier . Look like the coach is PC 3005 , beleive they did go to Amtrak a few years later. ( I see it is the 5956)

Jeff Gast Greenwood, Indiana Date: 11/04/25 06:52 Re: Penn Central GP7 5856 With an Easy Job Author: mvrr10 Yes the two coaches are PRR P70FBr coaches the Pennsy rebuilt from 1949-1952 , they were further updated circa 1966 , some receiving the "wagon top " roof over their original roofs . They lasted long enough to run behind Amtrak E60CHs , Amfleet finally trickled down to the Clockers and they finished up in NJ,MA and Chicago . Fine riding cars due to their trucks and weight .
