Flare Friday: N&W visitors thru Emporia
Author: santafe199

I first experienced Santa Fe leasing power in 1977. It was my first full year shooting with a 35mm camera. Santa Fe had leased power from the Canadian National and the Chicago & North Western. N&W power was leased the following year in 1978 and again in 1979. I always thought N&W looked good mixed with the blue & yellow stuff. It was fun times for this young photographer/new railroader with a ’78 seniority date…

1. N&W 1747 and 1719 are trailing in a westbound AT&SF consist at Emporia, KS.
B/W negative taken on July 4, 1979.

Thanks for looking back (in black & white)!

Thanks for the shot, Mike! A copy will go right into my master SFe file. I came 'of age' watching pooled power roll through my home town of Manhattan, KS on the UP(KP). Mop. Frisco, N&W etc. But leasing power was a whole different ballgame. Fun times for sure... :^)

Nice shots, both!

I miss the dogs' breakfasts that were the SP/SSW in the 80s and 90s, and to some degree the UP in its early gobbling era (not to mention the mid-90s when the borg was in full effect). At the time I was observing the Santa Fe, their power sets seemed comparatively uniform, at least around Topeka and NE KS.
