Circa-1985 Amtrak chart comparing pre-NECIP Boston with post-NECIP

The traditional NH main line via Back Bay was closed
for some years? How many? Or was it just Amtrak
that quit running there -- did commutes continue there?
Any freight?

Okay, I can't find my decoder ring in the junk drawer so what is NECIP?

In the early 1980s the ex-NH main line between Back Bay and Readville was closed and rebuilt over 3 or 4 years.  The rebuilding put the NEC and the MBTA Orange Line elevated/subway side by side in a trench.  Amtrak and MBTA trains used the Fairmont Line between South Station and Readville.  MBTA operated a shuttle train between South Station and Back Bay Station for passengers going to/from Back Bay but rerouted from/to South Station.
