Southwest Limited in BW
Author: santafe199

More fun from the brutal winter of 1978-79. Not so much fun for Amtrak, though! For a few weeks my late KS Gang bro Dave Franz & I made the most of it shooting many terribly late Amtrak trains, both westbound trains #3 & #15 (SW Ltd & Lone Star) and sometimes the eastbound #4 (SW Ltd). Coming up from Texas EB train #16 (Lone Star) was usually not affected by the winter weather. Fun times if you were stocked up with plenty of film…

1. AMTK 510 on train #3, the “Southwest Limited” just west of Strong City, KS.
B/W negative taken January 17, 1979.

Thanks for looking back!

Thanks Bryan! I for got to mention that I think I posted a color version of this shot quite a few years ago. But because I'm posting at Mickey D's right now I can't seem to find any record of doing so. In my B/W days my standard practice was to put the B/W camera on a tripod, pre-pick a spot and shoot left-handed while hand-holding the Kodachrome shot with my right...

Lance, what kind of B&W film were you using back then, just curious.

It was mostly Kodak Panatomic-X (32 ASA), with some Plus-X (125? ASA). In the early 80s I was tipped off about Ilford's XP stuff, nominally rated at 400 ASA and very pushable. I used that a lot shooting the music scene in the early to mid 80s. As I was getting out of shooting 35mm stuff for railfanning. Just too small. I intended to go to a larger format for B/W railfanning, but reaganomics was kicking the shit out of us honest working types and I just couldn't afford to invest in a camera + the needed variety of lenses... :^(
