Nostalgia & History > One for Tower TuesdayDate: 12/02/25 09:01 One for Tower Tuesday Author: bobdavis A Penn Central westbound passes "Cly" Tower near York Haven, Pa. with an even 100 cars on January 18, 1970. The cut of loaded multilevels head out probably marked the train as either NJC-1 from North Jersey or TH-3 from Wilmington, Del. Both of the E44's still wear complete Pennsylvania Railroad paint and lettering. If I recall, Cly was in a rather remote location. It controlled the junction of the Atglen & Susquehanna Branch and the Northern Central line to York, Pa. and Baltimore. It lasted until the mid 1980s.

And came down the A&S? Wonder how many westward freights used the low-grade. Date: 12/03/25 14:54 Re: One for Tower Tuesday Author: bobdavis timz Wrote:

I couldn't ID those cars as GM's but if they were, the train is defintely NJC-1. It carried loaded autos from GM/Linden as well as Ford/Metuchen (both in northern New Jersey). As for westbounds using the Low Grade, I'm pretty sure that most general freights and mineral trains used the low grade A&S branch. Hotshots like TV train were usually routed via the main line through Lancaster. Bob |
