Gildersleeve copy slide classics (vol 91): Classic SFe Fs!
Author: santafe199

Set 171 has a pair of captions that come really close: Caption #12 reads: “A freight near Victorville, Oct. 8, 1950. Frank Peterson”. And caption #13 reads: “A westbound freight at Lugo, Oct. 8, 1950. Frank Peterson". So I’m pretty sure Mr Peterson shot this image on October 8, 1950. But I’m rolling the dice with the location. I think I’ve seen this angle before, but as usual I’ll let an expert confirm the actual location. (Or not… :^)

Photo by Frank Peterson. Tom Gildersleeve commercial Ektachrome copy slide from set #171.
Scanned from the late James W. Watson collection.

Thanks for any necessary help!

Not a lot to work with, location-wise. But I don't recall a rock formation like the one in the lower right corner around Lugo.  Looks more like the area along the Mojave River, near Victorville or between there and Oro Grande.
Someone will identify that hill in the background.
Anyway, fantastic shot.  Thanks for posting these!

I would guess west of Frost since he is on what looks like the split just past the Frost crossover. West of there back then it was double track 251 territory and there would be a track between photographer and train.

Having also worked that area on the Santa Fe, I agree with 3rdswitch.  West of Frost.

Ok, I’ll take another look at the set caption list when I get the chance. Maybe something will fit better. Thanks for the input!

The photo above is frame 12 at Frost, just west of Victorville, CA.  The rock formation in the right background is part of the the Upper Narrows of the Mojave River, which can be seen more clearly in the background of the photo of UP 1516A West in this old thread:

The photo below is frame 13 of a westbound at Lugo:

Here's frame 14 from the same set, another Frank Peterson shot taken a few weeks later on October 30, 1950.  It's at basically the same spot as frame 12 but a bit further from the track, showing the Upper Narrows in the background a bit better.
