Nostalgia & History > The Centuries pass in Owego NYDate: 12/07/25 07:21 The Centuries pass in Owego NY Author: JPB All 3 RRs that passed through Owego in New York's Southern Tier in the '60s rostered some form of Alco Centuries.
1 - EL had C424s and C425s but no 6 axle Centuries - here a lone C425 handles a high & wide load head out fronting 86ft auto parts box cars on the east side of Owego bound for the Ford assembly plant in Mahwah NJ in spring 1969. 2- LV, a loyal Alco customer, had a dozen C420s delivered in 1964 and 17 C628s delivered in 1965 and 1967, Here a second hand ex-Monon C628 leads a C420 on the Sayre-Binghamton turn with D&H interchnage crossing Front St in Owego. 3 - D&H, another loyal Alco customer, received 18 C628s in 1965 to supplement their 1st generation B-B RS units. Here in September 1976, a D&H Century badly in need of a wash accelerates an eastbound manifest at mp 236 Owego. Conrail is barely 6 months old and owns the ex-EL Southern Tier track but independent D&H has trackage rights between Buffalo and Binghamton. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/07/25 07:22 by JPB.
