A Rock Island FM H15-44
Author: MartyBernard

The Rock Island had only two FM H15-44, numbers 400 and 401. This shot of 401 was taken from Chicago's Roosevelt Road Viaduct on May 13, 1964.

From the location of the exhaust stacks it appears to have already been re-engined by EMD in this photo.

Hefty looking brute, bastardized with EMD inners, sigh! Like putting a Chevy Sovebolt in a Ford "T" Bucket.
Disgraceful.

My favorite F-M rebuilds were the Wabash Train Masters that were done by Alco. Unfortunately N&W relegated them to hump service after the merger.

Thanks for posting.
Backing into 12th St. yard where a few tracks were used as a coach yard for suburban equipment.

This provides an earlier view taken from about the same vantage point as a shot taken in 1977 posted by Santafe199 back on December 1st:   Maroon Monday for a northern location

I believe that the left side of the other photo captures the corner of the structure that the autos are parked in front of in the FM photo.

Rail historian Bill Pollard of Little Rock just wrote an article for the South Central Chapter
of the R&LHS on the use of F-Ms on the Choctaw Route.  Very interesting!
